FAQ🔖

FAQ About Sole Proprietorship Registration

Can I start a business in Slovakia as a foreigner?
Yes! Slovakia is one of the most business-friendly countries in the EU for entrepreneurs, including foreigners. You can register a sole proprietorship or a limited liability company (Slovak s.r.o.), even if you are not a Slovak citizen.

The process is straightforward, and with our assistance, you can complete your business registration online without visiting any offices. However, you will need a business address in Slovakia—if you don’t have one, we can provide a virtual business address to meet this requirement.

Whether you're a freelancer, consultant, or planning a larger venture, starting a business in Slovakia is a great way to operate in the EU with low taxes and simplified procedures.
What documents are required to register a sole proprietorship?
To register a sole proprietorship in Slovakia, you need to provide:

• A temporary refuge document (dočasné útočisko).
• A Slovak criminal record certificate (if you have had temporary refuge for more than 6 months).
• Proof of business address usage or a Virtual Business Address from Oki-doki.
Where should the criminal record certificate come from?
A foreigner registering a sole proprietorship in Slovakia must provide a criminal record certificate with an apostille, issued within the last 90 days, from their country of citizenship or any country where they have resided continuously for over 6 months within the last 5 years. The certificate must be translated into Slovak by a court-certified translator.

If the foreigner has lived in Slovakia for more than 6 months, they do not need to provide a criminal record certificate from other countries. Instead, they can obtain a Slovak criminal record certificate from the nearest post office in Slovakia.
How can I obtain a criminal record certificate with an apostille from my home country?
To obtain a criminal record certificate, you must contact the relevant law enforcement authority in your home country. If you are abroad, you can inquire at your consulate about the procedure for obtaining the certificate.

If you are unable to obtain the certificate yourself, we can assist you in obtaining it online through our partners. Just contact us, and we will provide all the necessary information.
How can I obtain a Slovak criminal record certificate?
To obtain a Slovak criminal record certificate, visit the nearest Slovak post office. Typically, you only need to present an identification document, such as a passport or residence permit. However, in some cases, officials may request a birth certificate translated into Slovak by a court-certified translator. If you do not have this document, we recommend trying another post office. 😉

The cost of this service is €3.50, and it can be obtained within an hour.

The Slovak term for a criminal record certificate is 'Výpis z registra trestov'.
What are the requirements for registering a sole proprietorship?
To register a sole proprietorship in Slovakia, you must:

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have no criminal record.
Can a foreigner start a business immediately after registering a sole proprietorship in Slovakia?
Starting from July 15, 2024, foreigners with temporary refuge (dočasné útočisko) in Slovakia will have the right to engage in business activities without the need for additional permits.
How can I get an address for sole proprietorship registration in Slovakia?
To register a sole proprietorship in Slovakia, a foreigner must provide a valid business address and submit documents proving their right to use the property for business purposes. This address is also required for receiving business mail.

This step often causes difficulties, but not for our clients! We provide a virtual business address rental service for sole proprietorships and LLCs, including mail handling services.
How will I know when my sole proprietorship is registered?
Once your registration is complete, we will immediately send your business license to your email and Oki-doki account in PDF and ASICE formats.

Additionally, if you have a Slovak residence permit that allows business activities, your sole proprietorship will be listed in the Slovak entrepreneur register — ŽRSR.SK.
What is ASICE?
ASICE (Advanced Electronic Signature with Qualified Certificate) is a digital signature format that ensures a high level of security and legal validity. ASICE complies with European standards and is used for exchanging electronic documents, including important legal files and business licenses.

Government-issued documents in Slovakia are commonly provided in this format.
How can I obtain a paper original of my business license?
When registering a sole proprietorship with us, you can order an additional service to receive a printed original of your business license for €10.00. We offer delivery within Slovakia.

Alternatively, you can obtain a paper original at any Slovak post office. Simply transfer the ASICE file to a USB drive, visit a post office, and request a certified conversion of the document from electronic to paper format (Slovak: Zaručená konverzia do papierovej podoby). This service costs €2.00.

Additionally, you can request an extract from the entrepreneur register (Slovak: Výpis zo živnostenského registra) at any district office in the business registration department. This extract holds the same legal validity as a business license. The cost of obtaining this extract is €3.50.
